Moosepaths

Moose are not only big ugly versions of horses, perhaps horses that have been mated with cows, but they are also lazy.

They stick to the low grounds. They don't climb hills when there is a horizontal alternative to their destination. They swim well, and easily, and prefer a relaxing respite from the deerflies and blackflies over a walk through dry land.

When the road builders in northern ontario looked for routes for their roads, they were also looking for the easiest path through the wilderness. They followed the moose.

When you drive the country roads in southern Ontario (south of Sudbury) you drive on a grid. East and west, south and north. That's thanks to Lord Simcoe who sent a bunch of guys out to drag a 66 foot chain around and drive stakes into the ground on an imaginary grid in the 1600's. Yes. I said 1600's. Many died from blackfly bites. That's a whole other story.

When you drive the northern ontario roads, you get to use your steering! You feel like your in a sportcar driving-in-the-country ad, until a moose jumps out onto the road!
